There are many times when conducting a literature search that it would be useful to add a filter for study type or design, data collection methods, etc, but there often are not reliable options for these provided on the platform via which we are searching a database. That is where the type of filter given below becomes very useful; they can be added to your advanced search in a separate search line or appended to the end of your basic search with the Boolean operator "AND".

These are some of the most commonly requested search filters.

Note: “Action research” is a broader term of “participatory action research,” but CINAHL and PsycInfo do not differentiate between them. If the SU/DE part of the string returns too many irrelevant results, try removing it from the string and executing the search again.

Note: “participatory research” may be conflated with “participatory action research” in the literature, especially because the SU/DE for the concepts is the same. You can combine these filters into one if you want to expand your search strategy’s recall.
