There are many times when conducting a literature search that it would be useful to add a filter for study type or design, data collection methods, etc, but there often are not reliable options for these provided on the platform via which we are searching a database. That is where the type of filter given below becomes very useful; they can be added to your advanced search in a separate search line or appended to the end of your basic search with the Boolean operator "AND".
These are some of the most commonly requested search filters.
CINAHL: TI case W0 stud* OR AB case W0 stud* OR SU “case studies”
PsycInfo: TI case W0 stud* OR AB case W0 stud* OR DE “case report”
Note: PsycInfo does not differentiate between case reports and case studies. If the DE part of the string returns too many irrelevant results, try removing it from the string and executing the search again.
CINAHL: TI ethnographic W1 (stud* OR research) OR AB ethnographic W1 (stud* OR research) OR SU “ethnographic research”
PsycInfo: TI ethnographic W1 (stud* OR research) OR AB ethnographic W1 (stud* OR research) OR DE ethnography
CINAHL: TI ethnologic* W1 (stud* OR research) OR AB ethnologic* W1 (stud* OR research) OR SU “ethnological research”
PsycInfo: TI ethnologic* W1 (stud* OR research) OR AB ethnologic* W1 (stud* OR research) OR DE ethnology
CINAHL: TI ethnonurs* W1 (stud* OR research) OR AB ethnonurs* W1 (stud* OR research) OR SU “ethnonursing research”
PsycInfo: TI ethnonurs* W1 (stud* OR research) OR AB ethnonurs* W1 (stud* OR research)
Note: PsycInfo does not have a subject heading for ethnonursing research
CINAHL: TI focus W0 group* OR AB focus W0 group* OR SU “focus groups”
PsycInfo: TI focus W0 group* OR AB focus W0 group* OR DE “focus group” OR DE “focus group interview”
CINAHL: TI “grounded theory” OR AB “grounded theory” OR SU “grounded theory”
PsycInfo: TI “grounded theory” OR AB “grounded theory” OR DE “grounded theory”
CINAHL: TI “historical study” OR AB “historical study” OR SU “historical research”
PsycInfo: TI “historical study” OR AB “historical study”
Note: There is no subject heading in PsycInfo for historical studies
Note: PsycInfo does not have subject terms for structured or unstructured interviews
For all kinds of interviews:
CINAHL: TI interview* OR AB interview* OR SU “interviews” OR SU “semi-structured interview” OR SU “structured interview” OR SU “unstructured interview”
PsycInfo: TI interview* OR AB interview* OR DE “interviews” OR DE “semi-structured interview”
For semi-structured interviews:
CINAHL: TI “semi-structured” W1 interview* OR AB “semi-structured” W1 interview* OR TI “semistructured” W1 interview* OR AB “semistructured” W1 interview* OR SU “semi-structured interview”
PsycInfo: TI “semi-structured” W1 interview* OR AB “semi-structured” W1 interview* OR TI “semistructured” W1 interview* OR AB “semistructured” W1 interview* OR DE “semi-structured interview”
For structured interviews:
CINAHL: TI structured W1 interview* OR AB structured W1 interview* OR SU “structured interview”
PsycInfo: TI structured W1 interview* OR AB structured W1 interview*
For unstructured interviews:
CINAHL: TI unstructured W1 interview* OR AB unstructured W1 interview* OR SU “unstructured interview”
PsycInfo: TI unstructured W1 interview* OR AB unstructured W1 interview*
CINAHL: TI lived W0 experience* OR AB lived W0 experience* OR SU “life experiences”
PsycInfo: TI lived W0 experience* OR AB lived W0 experience* OR DE “experiences (events)”
Any combination of methods:
CINAHL: TI mixed W0 method* OR AB mixed W0 method* OR SU “multimethod studies”
PsycInfo: TI mixed W0 method* OR AB mixed W0 method* OR DE “mixed methods research”
Specific combinations of methods:
CINAHL: (((TI mixed W0 method* OR AB mixed W0 method*) AND (AB [insert structured keyword string for specific methods you want to see combined])) OR ((TI [insert structured keyword string for specific methods you want to see combined] OR AB [insert structured keyword string for specific methods you want to see combined]) AND SU “multimethod studies”)))
PsycInfo: (((TI mixed W0 method* OR AB mixed W0 method*) AND (AB [insert structured keyword string for specific methods you want to see combined])) OR ((TI [insert structured keyword string for specific methods you want to see combined] OR AB [insert structured keyword string for specific methods you want to see combined]) AND DE “mixed methods research”)))
For example:
CINAHL: (((TI mixed W0 method* OR AB mixed W0 method*) AND (AB thematic W0 analys*)) OR ((TI thematic W0 analys* OR AB thematic W0 analys*) AND SU “multimethod studies”)))
PsycInfo: (((TI mixed W0 method* OR AB mixed W0 method*) AND (AB thematic W0 analys*)) OR ((TI thematic W0 analys* OR AB thematic W0 analys*) AND DE “mixed methods research”))
CINAHL: TI “participant observation” OR AB “participant observation” OR SU “participant observation”
PsycInfo: TI “participant observation” OR AB “participant observation” OR DE “participant observation”
Note: “Action research” is a broader term of “participatory action research,” but CINAHL and PsycInfo do not differentiate between them. If the SU/DE part of the string returns too many irrelevant results, try removing it from the string and executing the search again.
CINAHL: TI “participatory action research” OR AB “participatory action research” OR SU “action research”
PsycInfo: TI “participatory action research” OR AB “participatory action research” OR DE “action research”
Note: “participatory research” may be conflated with “participatory action research” in the literature, especially because the SU/DE for the concepts is the same. You can combine these filters into one if you want to expand your search strategy’s recall.
CINAHL: TI “participatory research” OR AB “participatory research” OR SU “action research”
PsycInfo: TI “participatory research” OR AB “participatory research” OR DE “action research”
CINAHL: TI phenomenolog* W1 (stud* OR research) OR AB phenomenolog* W1 (stud* OR research) OR SU “phenomenological research” OR SU “phenomenology”
PsycInfo: TI phenomenolog* W1 (stud* OR research) OR AB phenomenolog* W1 (stud* OR research) OR DE “phenomenology”
Note: reducing “qualitative observational study” to “observational study” in the TI and AB sections of this filter will decrease the precision of this search and will return a large number of quantitative studies in addition to the qualitative studies.
CINAHL: TI “qualitative observational study” OR AB “qualitative observational study” OR (SU “qualitative studies” AND (TI “observational study” OR AB “observational study”))
PsycInfo: TI “qualitative observational study” OR AB “qualitative observational study” OR (DE “qualitative research” AND (TI “observational study” OR AB “observational study”))
Note: This filter is for qualitative studies/research of any type
CINAHL: TI qualitative W2 research OR AB qualitative W2 research OR TI qualitative W2 stud* OR AB qualitative W2 stud* OR SU “qualitative studies”

CINAHL: TI thematic W0 analys* OR AB thematic W0 analys* OR SU “thematic analysis”
PsycInfo: TI thematic W0 analys* OR AB thematic W0 analys* OR DE “thematic analysis”
