St. Patrick's Day 2024

St. Patrick's Day 2024

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17th every year. The day is to honor the nationally recognized apostle Saint Patrick of Ireland. While his experiences were not entirely positive, having been kidnapped from his home in Britain at the age of 16 and taken as a slave to Ireland, his decision to return back to Ireland after escaping captivity to do missionary work is inspiring to many people.

In the centuries following his death which is presumed to be March 17th hence the prominence of this date, a lot has since changed in regard to what is true and that which is a myth. Regardless, his work has especially been ingrained in the Irish culture such as the significance of the Shamrock (three leaf clover) which remains the national flower of Ireland. It is believed that Saint Patrick used the Shamrock to explain the trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit).

While observed as a religious holiday in Ireland, today the day encompasses celebrations across the world. Check out St. Patrick’s Day 2023: Chicago river dyed bright green in annual tradition. In fact it is believed that the very first St. Patrick's Day parade took place March 17th 1601.
