How to search for print books in the BU Library catalogue: Home

There are two ways you can search for books in the Library catalogue:

1. Searching for a specific book, for example, a textbook, or another book where you know at   least the title, and hopefully the author of the book.

  • At the library's One Stop Search box, enter one or two main words from the title, and the author’s last name. Even if the title is very common, for example Psychology, adding an author’s name should narrow the list to the item, if we have it in the collection.
  • For example, if you were looking for the book Psychology by Marie S. Hammond, enter your search words:  psychology hammond
  • Here's what that would look like:
  • Your search result will look something like this:
  • Screenshot of a search result for the words psychology hammond, witha greee arrow pointing to "Show more".
  • Under Resource Type, click on "Show More" and then click on "Books" to see all the books in the list.

2. Searching for a book, or several books, on a topic

  • At the library's One Stop Search box, enter 2 or 3 key words that describe your topic. This is a broad, general search that is likely to give a result list that contains books.
  • For example, if you were looking for books on the history of gender nonconformity, you could enter those three words, like this:
  • When you have a result list, in the grey, left-hand column, under Resource Type, click on "Books", and then under Availability, click on "Available in the Library".

Change what items are shown in the result list by using the filters in the left-hand column.

Click here for more information on how to use the filters to tweak your result list.

  • write down or take a picture of the location information for the item. In the example below the location information in highlighted in yellow:
