Borrower Information

Library Users

  • It is the responsibility of the library user to be aware of and adhere to: identification requirements, loan periods, lending procedures and restrictions, due dates, renewals, returns, and fines (as outlined below).

  • It is the responsibility of the library user to review and act on communications from the Library and the Library System regarding borrowing activity.

  • Library users must ensure that all contact information on file associated with their library account is current and accurate.

Library Cards

  • You must have a current BU Library Card to sign out material.
  • You are responsible for every item signed out on your card.
  • You may not use someone else's card or allow anyone to use your card.

Loan Periods

  • Reference Books, microforms, and government documents are for in library use only.
  • Periodicals are 1 week loan.
  • Books are 4 week loan (Graduate students can borrow books longer.)
  • A V materials are 2 week loan.
  • Reserve items  vary so be sure to check.

Loan Restrictions

  • Reserve = 2 items at a time.
  • Periodicals = 5 items at a time.
  • Regular Stack Books = 5 items from each subject area.
  • DVD/video = 5 items at a time.
  • CD/cassette = 8 items at a time.
  • Pamphlets = 5 items from each subject area.

Loan Renewals

  • As long as the item is not on hold (requested by another patron) and your account is in good standing, you may renew it twice.
  • You may renew in person, online, by telephone during library hours (Main Circulation: 204-727-9646, 1-877-253-6765 or Music Circulation: 204-727-9630), or reply to email notifications.
  • There are no renewals for Reserve Materials.

Holds

  • If an item you have signed out is put on hold by another patron, you will be notified and it must be returned by the revised due date.
  • If you have a password for the library catalog, you can place your own holds and view your account. Ask at Circulation for information, or call 204-727-9646, 1-877-253-6765 if you are want to place a hold from your home computer.

Inter-Library Loans

  • Use Inter-Library Loans if you would like to borrow books or journal articles not in our collection. This service is available to current Students, Faculty and Staff of Brandon University. For information on costs and turn-around time, contact the ILL staff at 204- 727-7316 or ill@brandonu.ca.

Reserve Material

  • Reserve Materials must be signed out - even if you are using them in the library.
  • Reserve Materials are listed on the library catalog and in a binder at the Circulation counter.

Overdue Material

  • Library users are responsible for paying all fines and fees associated with overdue, damaged, or lost materials.
  • Materials are fined on a per item, per day basis. The fee for books in the general collection is 50 Cents Per Day, Per Item.
  • Reserve materials are fined by the hour. The fee for overdue Reserve items is $1.00 Per Hour, Per Item.
  • If your fines reach $5.00, your borrowing privileges will be blocked.
  • If your fines reach $20, your fines will be billed and transferred to the Financial & Registration Services Office where payment must be made.
  • If items are not returned, you will be billed for their replacement cost plus a billing fee. This bill is payable at the Financial & Registration Services Office and your library borrowing privileges are suspended until paid in full.
  • Requests for fine forgiveness will be routed to the Circulation Supervisor, or as needed to the Chief Information Officer.
  • Library employees will encourage users to use the Food for Fines program as an option for paying off fines.

COPPUL Cards

Book Returns

  • Book return slots are available at Library entrances.
  • There are no return slots on the outside of the building. Consequently, once the building is locked, nothing can be returned.

If you are not a Brandon University Student, Staff or Faculty Member

  • You can borrow books from the John E. Robbins library.
  • You can register for a library card either at Main Circulation or the Music library. You must provide proof of ID and proof of address.

Proof of identification constitutes a government, school or post-secondary-issued photo ID. Identification must be current. Proof of address constitutes a government identification noting name and address, or supporting document noting name and address (such as a bill). Users must present identification when requested to borrow materials or to obtain logins for computer workstations. All exceptions to identification requirements are to be forwarded to the Circulation Supervisor or Chief Information Officer.

  • You must have your current ID whenever you wish to borrow material.
  • We will not ship library material directly to you. If you are at a distance and want to borrow BU Library material, you should contact your local library and have them arrange an interlibrary loan.

Loan Limits for Community Borrowers

Community borrowers may borrow up to 5 items, including videos. Community borrowers may not borrow periodicals or reserve items. Reference items, microforms and government documents are not loaned. Exception requests may be forwarded to the Circulation Supervisor or Chief Information Officer. In the Music Library, exception requests may be forwarded to the Music Library Assistant or the Music Librarian.

High School Student Library Accounts

BU does not have separate library accounts for high school students. High school students 16 and over, and in the Brandon area, can request a Community Borrower account upon proof of identification (current government issued photo ID, or current school issued photo ID) and home address (may include a current mailed document such as a bill). Students under 16 years of age will require parental permission for a Community Borrower account and the parent must provide proof of identification (i.e. current government issued photo ID) and home address.

Music Conservatory Student Accounts

BU does not have separate library accounts for music conservatory students. Those who are age 16 and over can request a Community Borrower account upon proof of identification (current government issued photo ID, or current school issued photo ID) and home address (may include a current mailed document such as a bill). Students under 16 years of age will require parental permission for a Community Borrower account and the parent must provide proof of identification (i.e. current government issued photo ID) and home address.

Internet Access

Users age 16 and over who wish to use the library computer workstations must present proof of identification (current government issued photo ID, or current school issued photo ID) to obtain the workstation login information from either the Library Circulation or IT Help Desk staff. The name of the user is recorded and retained for three months. Registration in Alma is not required for users who only wish to use library computer workstations.

Anyone under the age of 12 must be supervised by a parent or guardian when using the library, including computer workstations.

Anyone ages 12-16 must have permission from a parent or guardian to use library computer workstations. The parent or guardian must provide proof of identification (current government issued photo ID, or current school issued photo ID) to obtain the workstation login information.

Computer workstations and internet access are also available at the Western Manitoba Regional Library, the 7th Street Health Access Centre, the Brandon Women's Resource Centre, the John Howard Society of Brandon Men's Resource Centre, and the Samaritan House Employment Resource Centre.

Library and IT HelpDesk Code of Conduct and IT Acceptable Use Policy

Brandon University is committed to fostering a safe and respectful environment. Expectations for users are outlined in the Library and IT HelpDesk Code of Conduct and IT Acceptable Use Policy. These documents are available from the Brandon University website and at our service desks. Users not in accordance with these policies may be issued a verbal warning or asked to leave the Library. Concerns can be escalated as needed to the Student Assistant Supervisor, the Circulation Supervisor, or the Chief Information Officer.
