BU Queer: 2SLGBTQIA+ and Gender Diverse Resources

The ArQuives is the largest independent LGBTQ2+ Archives in the world and since 1973 the only LGBTQ2+ archives in Canada with a national scope. TheArQuives acquires, preserves, and gives public access to information and materials in any medium, by and about LGBTQ2+ people, primarily produced in or concerning Canada and maintains a research library, international research files and an international collection of queer and trans periodicals.

Housed at the University of Manitoba Archives and Special Collections, the Manitoba Gay and Lesbian Archives contains materials on the life, literature, art, philosophy and history of the Winnipeg LGBTTQ community dating back to the 1920s.

Housed at the University of Winnipeg Archives, the mission of the Two-Spirit Archives is to develop an internationally-renowned centre for research that supports the needs of the Two-Spirit community; makes Two-Spirit people visible in our documentary heritage; and supports the research, teaching, learning, and community mandates of the University. It is guided in its development by the Two-Spirit Archives Advisory Council, which ensures Two-Spirit people are central to preserving the history of their contributions to society and in strengthening their community.

The Transgender Archives at the University of Victoria is committed to the preservation of the history of pioneering activists, community leaders, and researchers who have contributed to the betterment of Trans+ and other gender-diverse people.

Located in Montreal, The Quebec Gay Archives have a mandate to acquire, conserve and preserve any handwritten, printed, visual or audio material which testify to the history of the gay and lesbian communities of Quebec.

Formed in 2016, the QHINB seeks to archive materials such as newsletters, event posters, photographs, organizational documents, correspondence, and oral histories from queer communities in New Brunswick. The Queer Heritage Initiative Collection (MC4111) is held at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick in Fredericton and contains records about various 2LGBTQ+ organizations and individuals from across the province, dating from the early 1970s – present.

The Nova Scotia LGBT Seniors Archive is a collaborative, community-based project. Originally funded through the Nova Scotia Department of Seniors, the Nova Scotia LGBT Seniors Archive is dedicated to creating a searchable and accessible collection of materials that highlight the contributions and advancements made by older Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender individuals, as well as individuals from across Nova Scotia who experience other sexual and gender orientations. Records include materials from the Gay and Lesbian Association of Nova Scotia (GALA), Lesbian and Gay Rights Nova Scotia (LGRNS), Churchmembers Assembled to React to AIDS (CARA), and complete runs of the LGBT magazines Wayves and Gaezette. The Archive also houses physical objects such as buttons and oversized banners from marches and rallies.

The Archives of Lesbian Oral Testimony (ALOT) presents online oral histories and testimony from same-sex and same-gender attracted women, inclusive of Two Spirit, queer, bisexual, and lesbian women, transmen, and others. ALOT was founded in 2010 by Professor El Chenier, Project Director and Associate Professor, Department of History, Simon Fraser University.

The Red River Rainbow Seniors is an organization dedicated to providing advocacy, education, support & fun for the 50+ LGBTQ community in the Red River Valley. In November 2017, the Red River Rainbow Seniors began an oral history project, “Breaking Barriers: Harvesting LGBTQ Stories from the Northern Plains,” to gather the histories of older LGBTQ people and their allies in North Dakota and Northern Minnesota in their own words.

The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University is a trusted source for critical issues in sexuality gender and reproduction. Their mission is to foster and promote a greater understanding of human sexuality and relationships through research, outreach, education and historical preservation. This incudes a collection regarding homosexuality, polyamory, transgender, sexuality in Asia, and erotica.

The Gerber/Hart Archives focuses its collections on gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer life in the Chicago metropolitan area and the Midwest.

The Leather Archives & Museum was founded by Chuck Renslow and Tony DeBlase in 1991 as a community archives, library, and museum of leather, kink, fetish, and BDSM history and culture.

The Queer Omaha Archives collects and preserves unique and rare materials about Omaha’s LGBTQIA+ history as part of the University of Nebraska Omaha Libraries’ Archives & Special Collections.

The purpose of the Digital Transgender Archive (DTA) is to increase the accessibility of transgender history by providing an online hub for digitized historical materials, born-digital materials, and information on archival holdings throughout the world. Based in Boston, Massachusetts at Northeastern University, the DTA is an international collaboration among more than sixty colleges, universities, nonprofit organizations, public libraries, and private collections.

The LGBT Community Center National History Archive is a community-based archive that collects, preserves, and makes available to the public the documentation of LGBTQ lives and organizations centered in and around New York.

Located in New York City, The Lesbian Herstory Archives exists to gather, preserve and provide access to records of Lesbian lives and activities. The Archives is home to the world’s largest collection of materials by and about Lesbians and their communities.

The LGBTQ+ Collection, part of the Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine, consists of collections of personal papers and archives of organizations active in the LGBTQ+ communities of Maine.

The Stonewall National Museum, Archives, & Library (SNMAL) is one of the largest gay archives and libraries in the United States. Located in Florida, SNMAL inspires and promotes understanding through collecting, preserving and sharing the proud culture of lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender and queer people of all stories, and their significant role in American society.

Oregon State University Queer Archives (OSQA) includes archival collections and materials that document LGBTQ+ histories at Oregon State University, Corvallis, and Benton County

In the summer of 2018 Professor Judith Raiskin of the University of Oregon Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies and Linda Long, Curator of Manuscripts in the University of Oregon Libraries, developed a project to interview members of the longtime lesbian community in Eugene, Oregon. The interviews were transcribed and the videos were prepared for viewing online. The bound transcriptions are available for use in the Special Collections and University Archives' reading room in Knight Library, University of Oregon campus.

ONE Archives at the USC Libraries is the largest repository of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) materials in the world. Founded in 1952, ONE Archives houses millions of archival items including periodicals, books, films, videos, audio recordings, photographs, artworks, organizational records, and personal papers. ONE Archives has been a part of the University of Southern California Libraries since 2010.

Founded in 1985 in San Francisco, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Historical Society is recognized internationally as a leader in the field of LGBTQ public history. Their operations are centered around two sites: the GLBT Historical Society Museum, and the Dr. John P. De Cecco Archives. The Dr. John P. De Cecco Archives and Special Collections are among the largest and most extensive holdings in the world of materials pertaining to LGBTQ people.

The June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives in West Hollywood, is one of the largest archives in the world dedicated to collecting, protecting, and preserving lesbian and feminist history and culture.

Based in Los Angeles, "OUTWORDS captures, preserves, and shares the stories of LGBTQIA2S+* elders, to build community and catalyze social change."

The Arizona Queer Archives at the Institute for LGBT Studies at the University of Arizona works in collaboration with the heterogeneous lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI), gender non-conforming, and Two Spirit communities throughout Arizona to identify, preserve, and make available records, papers, and ephemera of enduring (and endearing) value that document the distinct histories of these communities.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Archive at University North Texas is a collaborative project to document the history and culture of the LGBTQ communities in the South and the Southwest. This major collecting initiative involves working with community partners to collection documentation of people, places, and events through primary source materials, including letters, photographs, newspapers and magazines, scrapbooks, diaries, audio-visual materials, organizational records, posters, flyers, and objects.

The Australian Queer Archives (AQuA) collects, preserves and celebrates material from the lives and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex, queer, Brotherboy and Sistergirl (LGBTIQ+) Australians.

Skeivt arkiv is the Norwegian national archive for queer and LGBTQ+ history.

IHLIA is an independent organization located in OBA Oosterdok in Amsterdam committed to collecting amd making accessible records and information about the LGBTI community.

Founded in 2014, the LGBTQ Oral History Digital Collaboratory is directed by Prof. Elspeth Brown and based at the University of Toronto. As the largest LGBTQ oral history project in North American history, the Collaboratory connects archives across Canada and the U.S. to produce a digital history hub for the research and study of gay, lesbian, queer, and trans oral histories.

The mission of the Queer Zine Archive Project (QZAP) is to establish a living history archive of past and present queer zines and to encourage current and emerging zine publishers to continue to create. The primary function of QZAP is to provide a free on-line searchable database of the collection with links allowing users to view or download electronic copies of zines. By providing access to the historical canon of queer zines we hope to make them more accessible to diverse communities and reach wider audiences
