The Brandon School Division Challenge

Coverage of the May 8th, 2023 Board of Trustees meeting from the Brandon School Division website: http://video.isilive.ca/brandonsd/2023-05-08%20BSD%20Board%20Meeting.mp4.html

On May 8th, 2023

Ms. Lorraine Hackenschmidt, a Brandon constituent argued for the removal of, “transgender books in our school libraries”. Ms. Lorraine cited need to set up a committee of parents and trustees to examine the LGBTQ books in Brandon School Division libraries and removal of those with vulgar language, description of sexual acts, and those that appear to be pornographic. The Brandon School Division Board of Trustees heard from 30 delegations and moved to reject the call for formation of the committee at it’s May 23rd, 2023 meeting. The Brandon School Division Board of Trustees strongly reaffirms the Administrative Procedure 4535 Human Diversity. In doing so, the Brandon School Division Board of Trustees supports learning environments that respect and embrace diversity, that create welcoming and safe spaces, raise awareness and learning, support and protect everyone, including transgender and gender diverse people, and others who have not yet identified. As well, the Board of Trustees recognizes the importance and life‐changing role that inclusive educational environments can play in building the personal resilience of transgender and other gender diverse students and their families.
