The Blackfoot Digital Library is a venue for sharing stories about families and communities, past and present. Most certainly it is intended to be an educational resource for all those now living in kitawahsinnoon. This resource is an opportunity to bring home the field notes, photographs, and recordings that have been spread all over the world; to respond to publications that have misinterpreted and misrepresented Blackfoot experiences and ways of life.

This guide is intended to provide assistance in identifying current publishers of material by or about First Nations, Métis and Inuit. The focus is on Indigenous-owned publishers, and academic and small presses that publish the work of Indigenous authors.

25 of the best Indigenous picture books published in Canada between 2018–2020 were selected for this collection. Care was taken to ensure that the collection reflects the diversity of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit voices from sea to sea to sea, and that the titles are available and in print for anyone who wishes to access them.

Indigenous Arts & Stories (formerly the Canadian Aboriginal Writing and Arts Challenge) was born in 2005 and quickly became the largest and most recognizable creative writing competition in Canada for Indigenous youth. In 2010, Historica Canada (formerly The Historica-Dominion Institute) announced the expansion of the program into arts, and more than 3,000 emerging Indigenous writers and artists from every province and territory in Canada have participated in the contest since 2005. Indigenous Foundations was developed by the First Nations Studies Program at the University of British Columbia, located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam people.

Founded in 1993 by Anishinaabe writer Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm, Kegedonce is committed to the publication of beautifully written and designed Indigenous literature, both nationally and internationally. Kegedonce has published works by some of the most widely known contemporary Indigenous writers in Canada, including Joanne Arnott, Cherie Dimaline, Louise Bernice Halfe, Daniel Health Justice, Aaron Paquette, Sharron Proulx-Turner, Gregory Scofield, and Richard Van Camp, among many others.

Pemmican Publications is a book publisher with a mandate to promote Metis authors, illustrators and stories. It is a not-for-profit company that operates as an arm’s-length affiliate of the Manitoba Metis Federation. Pemmican publishes on average five to six new titles per year, with titles ranging from cultural studies and autobiographies to illustrated titles for children.

Pimootayowin is an Anishinaabemowin word meaning Journey, and Pimootayowin is dedicated to developing new voices for the theatre. Led by Governor General Award-winning playwright Ian Ross, the Creators Circle supports the creation and development of new plays by Manitoba-based Indigenous artists.

This site was conceived with a very particular aim: to make the writing of modern Native American authors, particularly the poets, both more visible and more widely available. The site now contains information on Native American poets and novelists. Toward that end, the sites residing on this server have been made with the collaboration of the authors, who maintain copyright to all of their own material.

As the oldest Indigenous publishing house in Canada, Theytus Books is recognized and respected internationally for its contributions to Aboriginal literature. Since its inception in 1980, Theytus ("preserving for the sake of handing down.” in Salish) has been a leading proponent for Indigenous authors, illustrators and artists. It ensures that their voice and vision are expressed with the highest level of cultural authenticity and integrity.

This website is the most comprehensive attempt to chronicle traditional Métis history and culture on the World Wide Web and contains a wealth of primary documents – oral history interviews, photographs and various archival documents – in visual, audio and video files. It also contains Métis-specific learning resources produced by Métis community members who work outside of the Institute.
