Historical National Topographic System
The Historical National Topographic System provides open access to digitized historical maps at the 1:50,000 scale. It covers towns, cities and rural areas in Canada from 1948 to the early 21st century. These digitized topographic maps have been georeferenced generating geospatial data that can be combined with other data for the purposes of comparison and analysis. They are useful for researchers to understand changes over time in areas like urban sprawl, shoreline erosion, transportation development, etc.
Created by the University of Toronto Libraries in partnership with McGill Libraries this collection provides access to over 6,000 Canadian maps. Once completed, it will include over 15,800 first edition maps and accompanying datasets.
